Get ready ‘to spice up your life’ version 2.0

If you thought the “Spice Girl” phenomenon was dead, think again.

A new British girl-band called “The Saturdays” are taking the world by storm, with their shameless pop album Chasing Lights, and with their long legs, and raunchy videos.

The girls say they are not models who can sing. In fact, all five have been performers all their lives, either at theatre schools or doing live gigs. Shame all that training did not include media interviews

Could these shameless pop princesses fill the pop void left by the spice girls last decade?

The Saturdays are making all the right moves, winning awards and performing with boy bands.

With their model good looks, catchy tunes, and a second album already recorded, but not yet released – The Saturdays are unstoppably on their way in.

Harris song ‘rejected by The Saturdays’

Harris song 'rejected by The Saturdays'

Calvin Harris has revealed that he originally wrote Dizzee Rascal’s new single ‘Holiday’ for The Saturdays.

The ‘Ready For The Weekend’ star offered the song to Rascal last year after it was first rejected by the ‘Issues’ singers.

“I wrote it for The Saturdays. But they didn’t like it. Or their A&R guy didn’t like it. But Dizzee liked it,” he told The Independent. “It happens.”

The Scottish producer insisted that his reputation had improved since pairing up with Rascal on their 2008 number one ‘Dance Wiv Me’.

“The fact that the guy who did ‘Acceptable in the 80s’ did a record with Dizzee made me slightly more credible to the outsider,” he said.

“So I guess from that slightly cynical marketing point of view, that was good.”

‘Holiday’ is released on August 31.

The Saturdays ‘threaten to go on strike’

The Saturdays 'threaten to go on strike'

The Saturdays have threatened to go on strike in order to secure time off work, it has been claimed.

According to The Sun, the ‘Issues’ five-piece managed to secure two weeks’ holiday after a standoff with their record label.

The argument was reportedly sparked by the company’s decision to have the girls share hotel rooms and fly economy class.

A source said: “It’s been non-stop for them for the last year and they have had enough. The album and tour were a success and they are bringing in loads of cash with endorsements.

“They feel it’s time they were rewarded for all their hard work. They have a reputation for doing whatever they’re told but now they are taking a stand.”

Singer Vanessa White recently described her group as the “princesses” of girlband pop compared to “queens” Sugababes, Pussycat Dolls and Girls Aloud.

An evening with The Sats, Sophie and GCC

Tuesday, July 28 2009, 12:17 BST

By Nick Levine, Music Editor

Yesterday we spent an evening with Fascination Records as part of the month-long iTunes Live Festival at Camden’s Roundhouse. We can’t offer a full review because, truth be told, the evening featured nearly as many G&Ts as corking pop tunes, but here are a few notes on the night’s performances.

Now, just before 9.30, it’s time for the main event. The Saturdays have flown back from LA especially for tonight’s gig, but there’s no sign of jet laggy sluggishness as the girls turn in a slick, well-drilled performance. They canter through a slightly abridged version of their ‘Work’ tour setlist, which means we get the ‘Shut Up And Drive’ / ‘I Kissed A Girl’ / ‘So What’ medley, acoustic renditions of ‘Beggin’ and ‘Chasing Lights’ (nice strumming, Una), and stomping newbies ‘Wordshaker’ and ‘One Shot’. A lovely ‘Up’ singalong rounds off a cracking evening. Ta very much Fascination Records!

The Saturdays play down chart rivalries

The Saturdays play down chart rivalries

The Saturdays have admitted that they would lose out in a chart battle with Girls Aloud, Sugababes and Pussycat Dolls.

The girlband, who released their debut album Chasing Lights last year, insisted that they are not yet trying to compete with more established groups.

Bandmember Rochelle Wiseman told Virgin Media: “We’re the queens of new girlbands – but we’re not trying to ever rival Sugababes, Pussycat Dolls [or] Girls Aloud yet, because they’ve got such a big fanbase and it would be impossible.”

Vanessa White added: “We’ll call ourselves the princesses then, not the queens, because we’re the babies.”

The stars recently flew out to Los Angeles to start work on their second album.

They released their latest single ‘Work’ last month.

Saturdays ‘really excited’ about new album

Monday, July 20 2009, 15:33 BST

By Nick Levine, Music Editor

The Saturdays have revealed that they are flying to Los Angeles this week to work on their second album.

The girlband aim to complete the follow-up to Chasing Lights – their 2008 debut – in time for a September or October release.

“Hopefully when we get out there we might get a chance to work with Evan Sturken and Carl Rogers, who wrote ‘Issues’ and did a lot of Rihanna’s stuff,” group member Rochelle Wiseman told DS.

“But we’ve got a pretty strict schedule while we’re out there so we’re seeing what happens.”

The Saturdays previously told DS that their new album will show a progression from their debut.

Saturdays Rochelle: 'I go commando'

WENN

Saturdays star Rochelle Wiseman has revealed that she once went commando.

The 20-year-old singer, who first found fame in S Club Juniors, admitted that she swam naked when she was on holiday in Ibiza.

“I swam commando, I swear on my life, on holiday,” she told Juice FM’s Breakfast with Adam and Leanne.

Probed for more information by her bandmates, Wiseman insisted: “I’m not telling you who with, that’s enough, you’ve got the truth!”

The group recently flew out to Los Angeles where they are recording the follow-up to debut album Chasing Lights.
